A home newborn shoot or Lifestyle shoot, as it's often referred to, is a session where I travel to you with my equipment and the shoot takes place in your home. While there are more variables with this type of shoot, there are many more opportunities for unscripted tender moments and intimate poses. Images can feel more personal when you are in your own surroundings. The best age for these un-posed more organic type of images is when your baby is 1 to 4 weeks old. The older your baby the more awake images you’ll get. If you have older children and other family members who want to get in the picture this is a great opportunity for more candid images.
Ultimately there is no right or wrong decision, it’s simply a matter of personal preference. Lifestyle or Studio both have their benefits. It’s up to you to determine what scenario will be best for your family. Ultimately if you can’t decide you can always book both!
"We wanted a subtle, natural shoot, which could be carried out easily and comfortably in our own home, so soon after the birth of our son. Sally offered exactly that. She was patient and gentle with Harry and worked around the rooms in our house to give us the natural shots we were after. We're so happy with the results and can't wait to get the photos. Thanks again Sally. Andy & Charlotte xx"
How do home sessions differ from studio sessions?
If you are looking for a more natural less posed look then you’ll probably find that a home session will suit you well. At home sessions are more about story telling, and less of the clean studio look, I travel light and only bring a few props and generally one studio light. I don’t expect clients to heat their homes to sauna level like my studio, so often images of your baby are swaddled or being held.
How far will you travel?
I will happily travel within a 100 mile radius of my studio in Braintree.
How much does it cost?
The session fee is the same price as my studio newborn sessions which is £100 and I charge £1.50 per mile. Additional charges may apply for central London locations.
Where in my home will you want to take images?
I generally shoot in the living room, nursery and master bedroom. I can move stuff around if needed. All I ask is that you make up your bed with plain white or cream bed linen as I often shoot in the master bedroom.
What should we wear?
For the whole family my advice would be keep it simple and neutral, avoid narrow stripes and large logos. Add a pop of colour with knitwear or accessories.
What should my baby wear?
A plain white baby grow and blanket for swaddling is all we need for your baby.
How long is a home session?
I allow up to 4 hours depending on how many family members are involved. This allows plenty of time and means your session is much more relaxed, sessions are often quicker, but these sessions are baby led and your little one dictates the pace.
Sometimes parents request more elaborate images and set ups. These images can be achieved at home via a process of digital composition. It's where multiple images are merged together to create one final image. Please see the images below as an example.
