As newborn sessions work differently to a normal photography session I have found it useful to prepare the following information to help you plan and prepare for your day in my studio.
It is very important that you take the time to read this document in full, so that you know what to expect from our time together and can prepare accordingly.
MOST IMPORTANT IF YOU ARE BREAST FEEDING PLEASE AVOID CAFFEINE AND CAFFEINATED DRINKS FOR AT LEAST 72 HOURS PRIOR TO YOUR SESSION. Babies who are affected by caffeine tend to be very jumpy, tense and alert.
Please aim to be at the studio for 10am, I do appreciate how difficult that is with a small baby so please don't stress if you are running late, if you could text me when you are leaving home so I can make sure the studio is nice and warm and that will give me a rough idea of your arrival time.
Day of the session
Before you get to me, I will heat the studio so it is nice and warm, this is to make the environment as comfortable for your baby as possible. However, that means the room will get very hot, so it is recommended that you dress in layers.
If at all possible try to keep your newborn stimulated a couple of hours prior to our session so he/she will be ready to sleep; a bath can help keep them awake. Its very important that your baby is sleepy during our session so our time goes smoothly and able to capture lots of adorable images!
Please don’t apply any sudocreme, oils or nappy creams on the morning of the session as they can mark the blankets and are difficult to retouch out.
Please dress him/her in a button down outfit so I do not have to pull anything over their head while undressing them on arrival.
If you want family photos as part of your session please let me know at the start of the session, I can offer two choices of background, light or black.
Light background works best with soft light coloured clothing for both parents, I would recommend a white tank top or t-shirt, no patterns or obvious logo please.
Black background photos work best black t-shirt and mum wears a black tank top, again no patterns or large logos. These images are shot to flatter and are upper body shots rather than full body shots.
Newborn sessions can take many hours; if you have older children, it is a good idea to have a plan in place for bringing them only for the family photos.
I do not recommend them to stay for the duration of the session, but if unavoidable itis a good idea to bring plenty ofsnacks/food/entertainment as there will be very long periods where there isn’t much for them to do, and we need a calm environment for the posed newborn photos.
A bottle with expressed breast milk helps if breast feeding, but only if you are happy to do this.
A small size dummy (cheap cherry latex dummies work best). The use of dummies/pacifiers can help get/keep your baby settled for the duration. Please consider their use just for the day, even if longer term you have no plan to use them. I have pre sterilised one's in the studio too.
Food drink and snacks for yourself
If you are bringing baby’s older sibling , anyentertainment for them as they can quickly get bored - I can give directions to the local play area if Dad needs to take siblings there.
Anything else you need to feel comfortable
Feed free to bring a book/ipad/entertainment for yourself – or just use the opportunity to have a nap!
Sessions can take up to 3-4 hours even with a very sleepy baby; most parents take advantage of this little break and relax!
Please mention any colour combinations prior to our session that you particularly like for the blanket setups.
I supply all of the accessories (hats, headbands, wraps etc).
I will take over as soon as you arrive, undressing your baby and getting him/her used to me.
If you are exclusively breastfeeding, that is perfectly fine, we can take as many breaks as we need to keep your newborn peaceful.
There will be pee or poo accidents and I’m perfectly fine with that please don't worry!
I begin with the baby photos and finish with family photos if these are requested.
Useful things to note
I would ask that you please forget about your normal routines, if you have them, just for the duration of the session. It's important the babies remain topped up during the photoshoot; full bellies make sleepy babies and this makes for the best results. If you are bottle feeding I will help warm the bottles to your desired level to help maximise your babies comfort.
The sessions can takealong time and I will be busy throughout. It is a goodidea if you bring food/drinks/snacks for yourselves.
